Mediation: Key skills and Cross-cultural Aspects

Summer School “Mediation: key skills and cross-cultural aspects” is aimed to develop international cooperation among young people and give participants the opportunity to open an effective way of dispute resolution at multinational level, and to obtain real knowledge in a practical format. Mediation usually save people’s time, costs and more likely to keep partner relations – it is efficient alternative of legal proceedings. Ukraine is actively developing the direction of mediation and is open to new methods and tools in this area. In 2020, mediation continues to spread in Ukraine, and some non-governmental organizations, practice centers and a small number of HEIs are disseminating information on the importance and effectiveness of mediation.

In 2018-2019 Karazin Business School has joined the implementation of the European project on mediation (MEDIATS) and is actively involved in the expansion of mediation in Ukraine. The theoretical and practical knowledge gained by our university’s teachers enables us to continue expanding mediation in various fields of activity, including the presentation of cross-cultural experience and approaches to mediation. Especially among young people (students), academic staff and scientists, business representatives, authorities, public sector, etc.

Our summer school will provide students with theoretical and practical knowledges of the basics of mediation process in different fields in multicultural environment and will test the possibilities of young mediators in conflict resolution in multicultural environment. This course will include a complex of lectures, seminars, and workshops, which oriented, on young and ambitious students, as well as those who wants to obtain knowledge about mediation or qualification of mediator.

In addition, all students will get acquainted with the peculiarities of the Ukrainian language and culture, study the role of the influence of cultural factors in mediation and conflict management.

Main results. At the end of the course, students will receive comprehensive knowledge in order to:

- to learn basic principles of mediation;

- to organize mediation process in different fields (business mediation, family mediation, online mediation, etc.);

- to understand the differences in mediation process in EU and non-EU countries;

- to organize negotiations between the parties;

- to understand psychological aspects of conflict resolution;

- to evaluate conflict situation and refer the parties to find the most effective solution of the situation;

- effectively organize your career development as a mediator.

 

At the end of the program students will take place at the final role play, there they will try to resolve the conflict between the parties.

Communication between students and teachers of the summer school will be conducted in English. After the completion of this summer course, students will receive a certificate of the school participant and confirmation of the received ECTS points.

Implementation of Summer School “Mediation: key skills and cross-cultural aspects” will be carried out based on the practically oriented master program “Management: Mediation”, which are implemented by the Karazin Business School for students of V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University. The main lecturers, experts and invited speakers are certified mediator with international and national certificates.
